Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) – State of the Art Medicine
UFE is the latest and most minimally invasive treatment for uterine
fibroids. It is NOT surgery. This is the procedure of choice for
women who wish to keep their uterus intact and definitely treat their
fibroids. It is an outpatient procedure that involves blocking the tiny
abnormal arteries supplying the fibroid tumors.
Using state of art imaging equipment those arteries are easily identified and treated. This specialized procedure has been successfully performed for decades and has the highest recommendation (category A) from the American College of Gynecologists. It is not a procedure offered by gynecologists and is therefore not an option for many patients.
UFE offers the shortest recovery of any fibroid procedure and most
women are back to completely normal activities in a week. Most
of all, no surgical incisions are made. No laparoscopic cameras
incisions, no large hysterectomy scars. Best of all, it requires no
hospitalization and is an outpatient procedure! The dangers of
anesthesia are also avoided, as UFE requires local anesthesia with
sedation. Women leave our office after a short recovery (generally 2
hours) with a small bandage on their wrist.
